The green movement and political party are particularly strong in Tasmania. Starting with widespread public outcry  over the governments attempt to dam the wild Franklin River in the late 1970’s, which ultimately led to much of west and southwest Tassie being protected and achieving UNESCO World Heritage Area designation. Today, direct actions are ongoing to try and stop the logging of unprotected old growth temperate rain forests and the use of poor forestry practices. This is a Matt Newton photo of Jenny Webber, the “Forest Angel”, taken during a blockade of a logging road in the Weld River Valley.forest-angel
